Two GSSM seniors earn perfect ACT scores
HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Two seniors at the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics have achieved perfect composite scores of 36 on the ACT, a significant academic accomplishment that places them among a select group of students nationwide.
Lucas Sheer of Columbia and Julia Candeo of Piedmont earned the highest possible score on the college admissions exam. Both students were also recently named National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, adding to their academic achievements during their senior year.
“A perfect score is difficult to achieve on any challenging assessment or competition. Lucas and Julia did it!” GSSM President Danny Dorsel said. “Their preparation and hard work at their previous high schools, combined with their experiences at GSSM, prepared them to meet the ACT challenge and earn perfect scores. Congratulations to both outstanding students. We are proud of you.”
Sheer attended A.C. Flora High School in Columbia before enrolling at GSSM, while Candeo attended Green Upstate High School. Both are now completing their senior year at GSSM's residential campus in Hartsville.
The students' accomplishments reflect the strong academic foundations they brought to GSSM and the opportunities they have had to further develop their knowledge and skills through the school's rigorous academic program.
At GSSM, students pursue advanced coursework in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while participating in research, mentorship, and other educational experiences. The school's residential learning environment brings together academically motivated students from across South Carolina, encouraging collaboration, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity.
As students prepare for college and future careers, GSSM's academic program emphasizes independent thinking, problem-solving, and opportunities to apply classroom knowledge beyond traditional coursework.
