Litter Cleanup a Success
Beach Sweep/River Sweep, South Carolina’s largest one-day litter cleanup, was held Saturday, September 19, 2026. During this 37th annual event, an estimated 4,500 volunteers statewide removed debris from beaches, marshes, and waterways at over 100 locations. In 2025, over 4,150 dedicated volunteers removed nearly 24 tons of litter, covering 972 miles of environmentally sensitive habitat in the state.
The litter cleanup is organized by the Consortium in partnership with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, and is held in conjunction with the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup. Major sponsors for the 2026 cleanup were Nature Adventures, Ocean Conservancy, PalmettoPride, Safe Harbor Charleston City, Taco Boy-Folly Beach, and Walmart Market #34.
